History and Origin
Elaeagnus has around 90 species worldwide, with the majority of them located in the subtropical areas of Asia, Europe, and North America. (1) The most important medicinal species of this genus is E. angustifolia (Elaegnus tree), (2) which is commonly called Russian olive since its appearance resembles an olive tree with small, reddish-brown, elliptic-shaped fruits. (3) Also, it is called Oleaster in the English language. (2)
Oleaster (Russian Olive) (Elaeagnus angustifolia L.) is a European-Asian tree (2) that can grow under different climatic conditions.
It is a plant that likes the sunlight and can withstand temperatures between 45 and 46 °C. This plant requires shallow-dry, poor or salty soil, and moderate water need for growth. It requires a minimum of 20 cm of precipitation during the year. (4) This tree may thrive in a variety of adverse environmental circumstances, such as floods, severe droughts, stony, sandy, and high salt or alkalinity of the soils. (3) So, it can be important in maintaining ecosystems in arid and semi-arid regions. (5) The Oleaster (Russian olive) is found in northern Asia, the Himalayas, and Europe, (6) particularly in Turkey, Caucasia and Central Asia. Although this species is used as an ornamental tree in many European cities, it is widely cultivated for its edible fruits in Central and Eastern Anatolia. (7) Also, it has different pharmaceutical and economic uses. All parts of the Oleaster (Russian olive) tree, such as the root, wood, bark, flowers, leaves, and fruits, have medicinal properties and are used in the food, sanitary, pharmaceutical, and perfumery industries, (5) as well as in woodwork and musical instrument production. Oleaster (Russian Olive) Plant Structure

In a 2017 study, the effect of oleaster (Russian olive) blossoms on sexual desire was investigated in 18–40-year-old women with low sexual desire. The participants received oleaster (Russian olive) blossom as a capsule (4 capsules a day, 2 capsules every 12 hours, for 35 days). The results of the study showed that oleaster (Russian olive) blossom was effective in improving sexual desire, but no significant increase was observed in the level of sexual hormones. (10)
In addition, the effects of oleaster (Russian olive) blossom capsule (4.5 g in two divided doses for 35 days) and sildenafil citrate tablet (50 mg for 4 weeks) in 18–40-year-old women who suffered from sexual arousal disorder were compared in a 2019 clinical trial study. 2. Increasing antioxidant activity
According to the findings of a 2021 study, an aqueous extract of oleaster (Russian olive) blossom has antioxidant properties. The researchers suggested that oleaster blossom can be used against degenerative diseases due to the presence of phenolic compounds. (1)
